Homemade Pickles

13 Aug

I am one of those people who is obsessed with pickles. If it were socially acceptable, I would probably bring a jar of pickles to work and chomp away at my cubicle all day. I mean, what is not to love? And if we’re out to dinner or lunch, and you have a rouge pickle on your plate, don’t be surprised when I ask you for it.

And although my love for pickles has been a life-long affair, it wasn’t until last week that I decided that I should (and could) make my own at home. I used this recipe for easy refrigerator pickles. I still have to wait two more days until these bad boys are ready. But if they’re going to taste anything like they look, I’ll certainly be making them again.

I made one jar of spears, and the other of sliced pickles (as seen above)

Summer Travels

7 Aug

I honesfly cannot believe its August–and with this comes the realization that I haven’t been able to blog nearly as much as I would have liked. Instead I’ve been traveling loads. Here are some of my recent adventuress

(1) Roof deck of the Gansevoort Hotel on Park in New York (2) Upgrades galore at the Bryant Park Hotel in New York (3) Took a trip down to the city a few weekends ago to meet up with friends, but absolutely had to stop at a kosher deli before heading back to no-deli-land (boston) (4) Took a quick trip home to DC (5) Spent one night last weekend at Martha’s Vineyard where I saw this beauty on a casual stroll through Oak Bluffs (6) Oak Bluffs sign right next to the jumping (Jaws) bridge. So glad that Shark Week started this week or else I legitimately would not have gone in the water (7) always happy to come home to Boston

Current Pinterest Inspiration

30 Jul

If you’ve read this before, you know that I absolutely love Pinterest. I mean, how could you not? Here are a few pinterest posts that are resonating with my mood lately:

(1) How-To fruit simple syrups. I’m dying to make some to spruce up everyday cocktails (2) Although I’m not a Lobster eater, I am dying to go back to Maine, and still haven’t checked that one off my Summer Checklist (3) Plum Galette. As plum prices go down, my consumption goes up (basic supply & demand)… but eating them like apples has gotten a little boring, so I’m excited to try a new recipe to really highlight their versatility (4) Little succulents. I was home last weekend and my mom had an adorable succulent display–so clearly now I’m trying to figure out a creative way to insert these into our apartment (5) Glittery Champagne. Need I say more?

Life Lately According to My iPhone

16 Jul

Life Lately:

(1) On Friday night the BF surprised me by taking me to a wine tasting at The Urban Grape in the South End (2) I tried my first Vouvray, and absolutely loved it! We also did some gin tasting from a local distillery (3) I spent some quality time on the couch this weekend, reading through some old Do It Yourself magazines my mom had sent me. We’ve been having the hottest summer ever–and to stay hydrated I have been adding mint and blueberries to my water. Totally does the trick (4) Finally tried Coconut Creamsicle Margaritas from  How Sweet It Is, and LOVED them (5) Went to the Jason Aldean, Jake Owen & Miranda Lambert concert in Fenway on Saturday. Basically was the best night of my life. (6) The most amazing flag installation at the MFA in honor of the Boston Marathon survivors.

Day Trip to Rockport

2 Jul

This past weekend the BF and I drove up to Rockport, Massachusetts for lunch. Rockport is this tiny fishing-turn-tourist-town about an hour outside of Boston. Neither of us have ever really been to the North Shore and were excited to explore what it had to offer. The weather forecast was supposed to be rainy and overcast, but somehow it cleared up right in time for lunch. We went to The Fish Shack for their famous Lobster Roll and then grabbed some ice cream at one of their local creameries. It was such a wonderful way to escape the city, even if just for a couple of hours.

DIY: Infused Vodka

30 Jun

Like I mentioned in last week’s summer check list post, I’ve been dying to make some infused vodka. It just seemed like a perfect way to make an extra-special cocktail by using some of your favorite ingredients. I saw this blog post while searching through pinterest a couple weeks ago, and knew that I just had to make a batch of pear-spiced vodka myself. Boulder Locavore has their own page in the blog dedicated to DIY vodka infusions–so many of which I cannot wait to try. Per her recipe, I made my own batch of pear-spiced vodka and am just itching for it to finish “infusing” so I can pop that sucker open and make a perfectly crisp cocktail.

SUMMER CHECKLIST

***

Every summer, I make a check list. This should not be surprising to you, if you’ve read this blog before. I’m really into check lists, mostly because I live for the feeling of crossing a to-do list item off. Such completion and finality. I just can’t get enough. In 2011, when I started this blog, I would frequently post check lists (like here, here, here and here). And because it is currently 93 degrees outside, and the sun won’t be setting for another three hours (bless you, summer!)–I figured it was about time, I get cracking on another summer list. And this summer, unlike every summer prior, I am going to make realistic goals that won’t overwhelm me:

1. Learn to can. What a weird summer goal, I know. I probably just miss Maine so much that I want to make enough blueberry jam to last me a lifetime.

2. Go on a camping trip… again, I think I miss Maine.

3. Make flavor-infused vodkas like this, this and this for the perfect summer cocktails

4. Make a photo album of my trip to Barcelona & Lisbon

5. One red sox game

6. Two visits to cities outside of New England

Six items to do before labor day. Wish me luck.
